“Gathering Dust”
Relentlessly productive and enviably prolific, Kagami Smile is back on Sound+Matter with a triptych of cassette releases, to delve deeper into his nuanced approach to producing music somewhere between ambient, drone and dub. “Gathering Dust” is a drifting slow-burner, which operates through dense soundscapes and subterranean beats and bass lines. Reaching peaks and climaxes is not the purpose here. Instead, weʼre guided through thick layers of ambiance, percussive sonic debris and reverberations from long abandoned club halls and chill out rooms. Kagami Smile is equally interested in warmer, dubbier production but in putting harsher soundscapes as well. Juggling with these polar approaches make his music a varying experience, which we cannot recommend more.
“Fragments of Loss” is one of the three consecutive Kagami Smile releases Sound+Matter are excited to be releasing this Summer. A very personal and conceptual collection of tracks, this tape is another showcase of the producerʼs hybrid post-club ambient sound. Field recordings are merged with synthetic soundscapes and this vibrant sonic mass is laid over vibrant and massive- sounding bass pulsations. Kagami Smileʼs take on ambient, dub and drone is not a mere musical backdrop but an active, ever-changing and organic world. It moves slowly only because thereʼs so much happening within it, giving enough time to explore its details and before you know it you simply become one with the sound.
“Sleep”
Kagami Smile returns to Sound+Matter for a triptych of cassette releases and, as its name suggests, “Sleep” is the calmest and most atmospheric one of the
three. Spanning over four tracks of drifting ambient soundscapes, the release focuses on the producerʼs interests in structuring dense, saturated and vibrant drone ambient worlds. Thereʼs no sign of Kagami Smileʼs favorite drowned kick drums and tectonic bass lines here. On “Sleep” atmosphere reigns and it is achieved through layering of comforting, reverb and delay-heavy pads and various sonic artifacts, samples and sonic bits. While “Sleep” is mostly slow- paced and hypnotic, itʼs also not afraid of intensity as one hears in “Your Life in the Mirror”. Despite being a mostly droning ambient affair, thereʼs enough anxiety, vulnerability and tension in this music to keep you engaged and wanting to replay it again and again.
